Lalbagh Fort Historical Facts and Pictures

The Lalbagh Fort is an incomplete Mughal complex, located in the south-east zone of Dhaka, Bangladesh. The construction of this fort was started in 1678 A.D by Mughal Prince Muhammad Azam Shah, the eldest son of Aurangzeb. After Prince Muhammad Azam Shah’s departure from Bengal, his successor Shaista Khan did not finish the construction, considering the fort as a bad omen due to his daughter, Pari Bibi’s untimely death.

With two gateways, the fort is a combination of three structures, the tomb of Pari Bibi, the Mosque and the Diwan-i- Aam. A beautiful roof-garden along with a water reservoir and fountains are located at the north of the southern fortifications.

Inside the Lalbagh Fort

The two storied building, Diwan-i-Aam has a small museum containing Mughal miniature paintings,calligraphy, coins, fire arms and swords. A doorway leads to a single storied hammam (Turkish Bath) on its west side.

The Mausoleum of Pari Bibi, decorated with white marble and encaustic tiles of different colors, is located in the middle of the complex. The Lalbagh Fort Mosque conforms a three domed structure comprising a water tank in the east.

The fort contains a maze along with many hidden passages and tunnels within its structure. During the night the illuminating image of the fort adds a mystical effect to the location.
