Located in the Armanitola area in Dhaka, Bangladesh, the Star Mosque was originally a simple rectangular construction, built by Mirza Golam Pir ( Mirza Ahmed Jan ) during the first half of the 19th century.
The entire structure of the mosque is enfolded with the design of stars and is a delightful spectacle of the Chinitikri (Chinese pieces) style of mosaic decoration.
The mosque was primarily a three domed structure before the intervention of local businessman Ali Jan Bepari, who redecorated the mosque with Japanese and English China-tiles and transformed it into a five domed structure with an addition of a new verandah.
Star Mosque Interiors
The interior structure of the Star Mosque is designed with different styles of glazed tiles of Chinitikri artwork. A mosaic floral pattern is displayed on the doorways and the three mibrabs. A motif of a plant and vase is used as a mode of decoration on the interiors of the verandah wall and on the pendentives.
The mosque was originally built according to the Mughal structure and in spite of further additions and renovations it still preserves most of its original form and is a remarkable specimen of exquisite artwork.
