Mohenjo-daro or Moenjodaro, the ruins of one of the advanced settlements of the Indus Valley Civilization, is located in the present day Sindh province in Pakistan. Established during the twenty-sixth century BCE, it was one of the earliest and largest urban settlements that flourished around the same time as other notable ancient civilizations of Mesopotamia, Egypt and Crete. In Sindhi, the literal meaning of the name is “the mound of the dead” (the original name of the city is unknown).

Mohenjo Daro
It was the most developed city of the ancient Indus Valley Civilization that grew in 3000 BCE, or any other contemporary civilizations, with remarkably advanced urban planning and civil engineering. Its extensive size, along with the well built public buildings with various facilities suggests an organized social system. Archeologists have distinguished two parts of the city, the Lower City as well as the so-called Citadel. The Citadel is a 12 meters high mud-brick mound that supported public baths. It also included a residential structure large enough to house around 5,000 citizens and a couple of assembly halls. The city of Mohenjo-daro also had a large central marketplace. Excavations carried out in the area has yielded objects like carved seals, balance-scales, weights, standing and seated figures, stone and copper stools, gold jewelry as well as children’s toys.

The ruins of the lost city of Moenjodaro remained undiscovered for more than 3,700 years, until Rakhaldas Bandyopadhyay, an Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) officer found and explored the lands for the first time in 1922. Currently a notable archeological site, Mohenjo-daro has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1980. However, the lost city and its archeological finds are in need of better restoration and protection.
