Red Fort Historical Facts and Pictures

Red Fort, located at the center of the Indian capital Delhi, is one of the most notable examples of Mughal architecture and a UNESCO World Heritage Site (2007). It stands as a symbol of the country with much political importance as the Indian Prime Minister raises the national flag at the fort’s main gate every year on Independence Day (15th August).
Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan built the fortified palace in his capital Shahjahanabad in the year of 1648. Apart from being the residential place of the Mughal emperors and their families, the Red Fort was also a political and ceremonial center of the Mughal Government, as well as the main setting for important events that concerned the entire region

The octagonal fort spreading in a 254.67-acre area is enclosed by 1.5 miles of defensive walls punctuated only by bastions and turrets from heights of 33 metres on the side of the city and 18 metres on the side of the river. The marble constructions, floral decorations and ornate double dome of the fort represent later Mughal architecture.
