City Palace, a palace complex located in Jaipur, Rajasthan in India, was the royal seat of the King of Jaipur and the leader of the renowned Kachwaha Rajput clan. Comprising of two main palaces, the Chandra Mahal and the Mubarak Mahal, the City Place is now counted among the main attractions of the city of Jaipur. The palace complex includes a number of gardens, courtyards and historical constructions with the large museum of the Chandra Mahal being one of the main tourist attractions.
The construction work for the City Palace began in 1729 by Rajput Maharaja of Amber Sawai Jai Singh II, after he shifted to Jaipur from Amber (in 1727) due to increased population and water problems. He originally planned and constructed the outer walls of the palace with the construction work completing in 1732. However, later rulers continued to make further additions to the palace complex. Apart from Jai Singh II, a keen enthusiast of art and architecture, the urban layout and the beautifully designed structures are credited to Vidyadar Bhattacharya, the chief royal architect and Sir Samuel Swinton Jacob, one of the notable architects of the time.
