Jaigarh Fort situated on the highlands of the ‘Cheel ka Teela’ (or Hill of Eagles), Aravalli range near Amber in Jaipur in the Indian state of Rajasthan, was one of the largest cannon foundries in the country during the Mughal Era. Built in 1726 by the Rajput ruler Jai Singh II to provide protection to the Amber Fort, the Jaigarh Fort provides a great view of the entire Aravalli Range along with the Amber Fort. It is one of the main tourist attractions in the area for its rich cultural and architectural value as well as its short distance from the current Jaipur city (15 kilometers). The fort also boasts of the “Jaivana Cannon”, the largest cannon on wheels, one of the main attractions of the place.
The structural design of the Jaigarh Fort is similar to that of the Amber Fort, with the former being located 400 meters above on the Aravalli than the latter to provide a proper view. The two forts are also connected by underground tunnels and are considered a single complex. Jaigarh was considered the strongest of all the three forts located in Jaipur as no one ever succeeded in conquering it in a battle. The only major ambush witnessed by the fort was when Aurangzeb defeated and killed his elder brother Dara Shikoh, the crown prince of the Mughal Empire, to gain the imperial throne.
