Lahore Fort Historical Facts and Pictures

Located in Iqbal Park on the northwestern corner of the Walled City of Lahore, The Lahore Fort is one of the most popular tourist destinations of Pakistan. Although the origin of this trapezoidal structure is ambiguous, the existing base-form was built during the reign of Akbar (1556– 1605).

This grand structure has two gates, the Masti or Masjidi Gate, built by Emperor Akbar and the Alamgiri Gate, built by Aurangzeb. Presently the Masti Gate is closed permanently and the Alamgiri Gate is used as the main entrance of the fort.

The entire structure is influenced by Persian art-form and is divided between two sections: administrative and residential. The administrative section comprises large garden areas and the Diwan e Aam, the exquisitely decorated marbled pavilion for the royal audiences.

Constructed on an elevated platform, Diwan e Aam projects a throne gallery on its rear wall and also includes a 34 feet high hall. The back of the building is decorated with beautifully cusped marble arches.

Lahore Fort Sheesh Mahal

The residential private section contains the Elephant Gate leading to the courts in the northern part and the famous Shish Mahal   (Hall of mirrors of Mirror Palace). Decorated with mosaic of glass inlaid gypsum, Shish Mahal is a semi-octagon shaped palace of composing chambers.

The Nauakha Pavilion is another remarkable spectacle of architectural beauty alongside the famous Shish Mahal. Located at the axis point of the hauz (water reservoir), this pavilion is famous for its bangladar roof-top construction.

Lahore Fort Moti Masjid

Residing at the western side of the fort is the white marbled construction of the Moti Masjid. Built by the Mughal emperor shah Jahan, this three domed structure is a typical representation of Mughal architecture.
