Agra Fort, the historical monument located in Agra in the state of Uttar Pradesh, India, about 2.5km northwest of Taj Mahal, the most recognized landmark of the country, is a UNESCO World Heritage site. The elaborate present-day fort – more accurately referred to as a small walled city – was built by the Mughal rulers of India. However, its basic structure, a smaller brick fort, stood there since the 11th century and was owned by the Sikarwar Rajputs. It was then captured by a Ghaznavide force in 1080 AD with Sikandar Lodi of the Lodi Dynasty being the first Sultan of Delhi to shift to Agra and live in the Agra Fort. The fort was captured by the Mughals after the First Battle of Panipat in 1526 along with a vast treasure which included the famed Koh-i-Noor diamond. Mughal Emperor Akbar built the elaborate fort after he moved to his new capital in Agra in 1558. According to his royal historian Abdul Fazal, the fort was then in a ruined condition and was known as ‘Badalgarh’. Akbar employed architects and construction workers to rebuild the fort and ordered special red sandstone from Barauli, Rajasthan to build its external surfaces. It took around 4,000 workers and eight years to finally complete the fort in 1573.
