The Cellular Jail or Kaala Pani located in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands in India, originally served as a colonial prison during British Raj in the country. Many Indian political activists or freedom fighters were exiled to the Cellular Jail in the remote lands of Andaman by the British rulers. Notable names of the Indian freedom movement, including Veer Savarkar and Batukeshwar Dutt, were imprisoned here for their endeavors to free their motherland from foreign domination. The Andaman Islands had been used by the British Government to exile prisoners since the 1857 Sepoy Mutiny. The construction of the prison complex did not begin until 1896, taking around 10 years to complete in 1906. The bricks used for constructing the puce colored building arrived from Burma. The three-storied seven-winged building has a central tower which served as the watch tower in old days.
