Golconda Fort Historical Facts and Pictures

Golconda Fort, located around 11 km from the city of Hyderabad in Andhra Pradesh, India, served as the capital of Golkonda, the ancient Kingdom that flourished between the 14th and 16th centuries. It is now a notable historical landmarks and one of the most visited tourist spots of the country. The origin of the fort goes back to 1143, during the rule of the Kakatiya Dynasty, even before the kingdom of Golconda rose to prominence. The Qutub Shahi Dynasty rose to power in 1518, after Quli Qutub Shah broke free of the dependence of the Bahmani Sultanate. The Golkonda kingdom came into being with Golconda becoming the seat of power of the Qutub Shahi rulers. Over the next few decades, the Qutub Shahi kings started expanding the earlier mud fort into an elaborate granite one, extending over a wide area of around 5 km.

It continued as the capital of the dynasty until 1590, when the capital was moved to Hyderabad. The marvelous fortress complex built on a 400 feet high granite hill is surrounded by 17 feet to 34 feet high walls, punctuated only by eighty-seven semi-circular bastions.
