Situated on the edge point of Ratnagiri district, Maharashtra, Jaigad Fort was part of the historical Maratha Empire. It is a coastal fortification, located at the meeting point of the Arabian sea and Shastri river.
Built with thick walls of red sandstone, this grand structure is an architectural wonder . The insides of the fort include the Lalit Mandir, Aram Mamdir, Laxmi Vilas and Vilas Mandir. A few rooms are visible on the Eastern side of the fortification.
Jaigad Fort Entrance
The main entrance is in the middle of two bastions, on top of which a Government rest house is located. A temple of Hanumanji is constructed on the left side of the main entrance. It is followed by a deep pit, located on the North-East direction, leading to the fortifications and a cave nearby.
Inside the Jaigad Fort
A temple of Lord Ganesh and a lighthouse are located inside of the fort premises along with an old splintered mansion of care takers. The fort includes two 70 ft. deep wells and another of 100 ft. depth. It also possesses a well-tended garden and a museum inside of its structure.
Although most parts of the fort are in ruins today, the fortifications are still strong and sound in condition.
