Qutab Minar, the 73 meters tall Islamic monument engraved with Arabic inscriptions, is one of the most visited historic landmarks of India and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Located in the city of Delhi, the present capital of the country, the red sandstone-marble construction was built by the Turkic rulers of the Northwest India.
The construction of the monument began in the year 1192 by the first Muslim king of Delhi, Qutb-ud-din Aibak, after whom it is named. His successor Iltutmish continued the construction work until the Minar was complete. Later, in 1368, Firoz Shah Tughlak built the fifth and final storey, thereby completing the construction of the present Qutab Minar. The tower has a base diameter of 14.3 metres, narrowing down to 2.7 metres as it reaches the top while there are a total of 379 steps for climbing the Minar.
