Located in Salisbury, Wiltshire, the Salisbury Cathedral is a marvelous embodiment of early English architecture. Formally titled as the Cathedral Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary, this Anglican cathedral possesses so many significant features within its structure.
Constructed only within thirty-eight years (from 1220-1258), the cathedral is the mother church of Diocese of Salisbury and also the seat of the Bishop of Salisbury.
Architecture and Design
The hollow wooden scaffold spire of the cathedral is the tallest in the United Kingdom. The cathedral also comprises the largest cathedral-close and cloister in Britain. Entirely decorated with columns, quatrefoil motifs and trefoil motifs, the large stone building includes two stair turrets, topped with spirelets along with the great central triple window, supported by two niched buttresses. The façade is entirely 33 meters high and wide.
Interior of Salisbury Cathedral
The cathedral houses the four best original copies of the Magna Carta. The clock residing within the cathedral is apparently the oldest working clock in the world. The narrow and tall nave of the cathedral is visually accentuated because of the polished dark Purbeck marble columns and light grey Chilmark stone-decorated walls.
A famous painting of the cathedral, known as Salisbury Cathedral from the Meadows, by John Constable, is on display currently at the National Museum Wales. In the painting, the rainbow above the cathedral symbolizes hope after a storm.
