Victoria Memorial is the marble memorial hall dedicated to Queen Victoria, the ruler of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland (1837 to 1901) and Empress of India. Located in Kolkata in the state of West Bengal, India, it houses a historical museum and is one of the most popular tourist destinations of the city.
After the death of Queen Victoria, the then-Viceroy of India Lord Curzon suggested the building of a royal monument in her memory. The foundation stone was laid by King George V (then The Prince of Wales) on the 4th of January 1906 while the hall was opened to the general public in 1921. The president of the Royal Institute of British Architects William Emerson designed the Victoria Memorial in the Indo-Saracenic revivalist style which combines the Mughal and British elements with the Egyptian, Venetian, Islamic and Deccani architectural styles. It is currently maintained by the Indian Ministry of Culture.
